Hundreds of LGBTQ+ people and allies gathered at The Ship in Kansas City's West Bottoms on October 24 for Queer Bar Takeover's Halloween Extravaganza, raising $2,508 for AIDS Service Foundation (ASF).

The Halloween celebration brought together a crowd of costumed partygoers for an evening of music, drag performances, dancing, and fundraising. DJ Mztekcah kept the dance floor moving throughout the night, while drag performers Kora Kay and Minti Varieties entertained the crowd. Face painter Natalie Leslie helped guests get into the Halloween spirit, and Shae Wells welcomed attendees and kept things running smoothly at check-in.

The event was organized by Lance Pierce, who founded Queer Bar Takeover in 2016 and has spent nearly a decade creating opportunities for Kansas City's LGBTQ+ community to gather, connect, and celebrate.

"Halloween has always been a bit of a high holiday for the gay community. It's a chance to be creative, experiment with different identities, and express parts of ourselves we might not always feel comfortable showing. There's something really powerful about that kind of freedom and queer joy," said Pierce.
"I've been organizing these events since 2016, and what keeps me going is seeing people come together, make new connections, and feel like they belong. The fact that we can also raise money for organizations doing important work in our community makes nights like this even more meaningful."

Supporting HIV/AIDS Services in Kansas City

Proceeds from the event benefited AIDS Service Foundation, a Kansas City nonprofit dedicated to supporting the local response to HIV/AIDS through fundraising, education, and community partnerships.

ASF helps fund organizations and programs providing HIV prevention, testing, treatment, and supportive services for people living with or affected by HIV. Its work also contributes to efforts to reduce stigma and improve access to care throughout the Kansas City region.

Through charitable ticket purchases and additional donations collected during the event, attendees helped generate $2,508 in support of ASF's mission.

The partnership reflects Queer Bar Takeover's ongoing commitment to using its events to support local organizations serving the LGBTQ+ community.

A Decade of Bringing Kansas City Together

Since its founding in 2016, Queer Bar Takeover has organized regular gatherings throughout the Kansas City metro, transforming bars, restaurants, and other spaces into welcoming environments for LGBTQ+ people and allies.

What began as a way to bring people together socially has grown into a community tradition, with events regularly attracting hundreds of attendees while raising money for local nonprofits.

The Halloween Extravaganza is the latest example of that approach, combining a night of entertainment with an opportunity for attendees to contribute to an important local cause.

A special thanks goes to the team at The Ship for hosting the celebration, AIDS Service Foundation for partnering on the fundraiser, and the performers, volunteers, and community members who helped make the evening possible.

With another successful Halloween celebration behind them, organizers are looking forward to making the Halloween Extravaganza an annual Kansas City tradition.
