Sometimes the news feels distant until it hits close to home. The federal shutdown has slowed down the delivery of SNAP benefits, and even though the government has found temporary funds to cover part of November’s aid, many families in Kansas City are still left wondering how they’ll fill their pantry this month. That’s where community steps in.
The Kansas City Leather Men of Color, a newly formed group rooted in visibility, brotherhood, and service, approached us about setting up a canned food drive at Q Kansas City. We didn’t hesitate to say yes. Starting this week, you’ll see a donation box tucked by the front door, a small spot that could mean a lot to someone else.
Bring a canned good, and we’ll thank you with a free shot.

It’s simple, but it matters. Every can goes straight to local food banks that are working overtime to help neighbors feeling the strain of reduced or delayed SNAP benefits. Items like beans, soup, rice, pasta, and proteins are especially needed right now.
This isn’t about grand gestures or big announcements. It’s about remembering that our strength has always been in showing up for each other. Queer folks know what it means to build something out of care, to find family in community when the systems around us fall short.
If you’ve got a little extra, bring it. If you need help, know that this city has your back.
Bring a can. Take a shot. Be part of something good.
