A Seat at the Table: Queer Dinner Club Comes to Urban Restaurant

On Tuesday, August 5th at 6:30-9pm, Queer Dinner Club is heading to one of Kansas City’s most inspiring and community-driven restaurants: Urban Restaurant, located at the corner of Troost and Armour. More than just a place to eat, Urban is a powerful example of how food, culture, and community can intersect to create real change.

The Chef Behind the Movement

At the heart of Urban Restaurant is Chef Justin Clark, a Kansas City native who, alongside his wife Rashaun, has built more than just a restaurant—they’ve built a mission. As a Black-owned business, Urban proudly stands in a neighborhood once known as a dividing line in Kansas City. Today, Justin is helping to rewrite that story with flavor, intention, and heart.

Chef Justin’s passion for food was deeply influenced by his mother’s journey through cancer, which inspired a shift toward clean, whole, and healing foods. The result? A menu that blends bold flavors, global inspiration, and a whole lot of care. From hearty brunch staples to unexpected flavor fusions, Urban delivers food that feels as good as it tastes.

“The goal was to create familiar items that everyone can relate to as Americans... and then we add international flavors and techniques to create that fusion,” Justin shared in a recent interview.

A Community Space with Purpose

Urban isn’t just a restaurant, it’s an anchor in the movement to reinvest in historically redlined neighborhoods. Through a recent grant from Kansas City G.I.F.T., Justin has continued to grow Urban as a source of pride and opportunity for the Troost corridor. The space itself is modern, inviting, and built to bring people together, perfect for a night like Queer Dinner Club.

As Justin has said, “Being part of the new development of Troost has always been a goal of mine.” That mission resonates with us at Queer Connect, as we strive to create welcoming and affirming spaces for the LGBTQ+ community across Kansas City.
